British Airways makes major in-flight change which has left some passengers fuming

Send Push

customers are seething over the airline's decision to overhaul in-flight catering in its business class.

The airline has decided to get rid of its traditional three-course dining experience in business class, leaving many customers angered following a major overhaul to how dinner is served and the kind of food passengers receive. Starters have been scrapped and there are now fewer options for mains and desserts.

On departures after 9pm, BA passengers will not receive appetisers or have a choice of dessert any more, with main meals to feature items such as paninis, soup and salads. The lighter ‘goodnight’ menu has been pitched to BA as taking customer's sleeping needs more into account.

Another change is that - as of 15 October - a new brunch menu will be served on all flights due to depart between 8.30 and 11.29 pm. It will be made up of lighter meals than the traditional lunch menu. However, some customers have noted that these lighter meals will be served to passengers at a traditional lunch time on services which leave at 11am or later.

One incensed traveller expressed their displeasure to the commenting: "I would love to see the amount saved per passenger from these cost cutting measures." They questioned whether it was "surely [...] worth the damage?" to the airline's reputation to make the change. Another passenger took a swing at BA's "cost cutting exercise," lamenting that the limited food offerings were an issue especially since they had no desire to sleep immediately on their post-9pm flight from

"Just because I am flying after 9pm from Miami doesn't mean that I want to sleep. If I want to drink I will – problem is now there is very little food to go with it." The same passenger pointed out the potential impact on cabin crew workload: "I guess they don't want the crew to work too hard."

Meanwhile, another customer sarcastically considered bringing fast-food onboard, musing: "I know it's terrible form but I might consider becoming 'that guy' and bringing a Whopper meal on board. Oh my fellow biz passengers will love that lingering odour," adding that "BA continuing its race to the bottom."

There was further criticism from yet another unhappy flyer who suggested that British Airways may want to become an economy only airline if more changes are going to be made to First and Club World classes. "If BA's bean counters can't see that First and particular Club are their cash cows then they may as well drop the class and become economy only," they said.

Another passenger queried: "In the absence of a proper main, does this not mean that the economy catering would be more substantial than in Club World."

A representative for British Airways told The Sun: "We're incredibly proud of our premium dining experience, which includes a wide range of meal options to suit the preferences of our customers depending on the time of day they're travelling.

"We trialled our new brunch offering with thousands of customers across numerous routes and received extremely positive feedback on both the quality and variety of options offered."

The news follows an announcement two weeks ago that the airline cancelled all its flights from until at least next year.

Hundreds of flights have been cancelled including from London Gatwick to New York, over the coming months due to delays in the delivery of engines from The journey from London Gatwick to the Big Apple will be suspended from December 12, to March 25.
