George Baldock funeral date set as Panathinaikos owner makes plan for heartbroken players

Panathinaikos owner Giannis Alafouzos is reportedly hoping to fly his players out to the funeral of their former team-mate next week following his tragic death.

Former Sheffield United star earlier this month after being found in a swimming pool at his apartment in Athens.

He had only joined the Greek team this summer after leaving the Blades - where he played 219 times - before his shock passing was announced, leading to tributes from across the football .

Baldock's funeral will take place in the UK on October 30 and Alafouzos is now looking at chartering a plane to ensure his devastated players can be present and pay their respects, according to the

Alafouzos also wants to make a further tribute, the report adds, in the hopes of protecting Baldock's family and could honour his three-year contract.

Baldock was a favourite at Sheffield United as he played a key role in helping them win promotion to the twice - once in 2018-19 and again in 2022-23.

He qualified to play for through his grandmother and went on to pick up 12 caps for the country, making his debut against Northern Ireland in 2022.

His Greece team-mates - featuring two Panathinaikos players - paid tribute to Baldock during their 2-1 win against England in the last international break, holding up a jersey with his name on the back.

The death of Baldock rocked the sport as his family released a statement hailing his "infectious personality".

"We are heartbroken with the sudden passing of our beloved George. George, you were the most special father, fiance, son, brother, uncle, friend, team-mate and person. Your enthusiasm and infectious personality brought so much love to those that were fortunate enough to know you and those that adored you from the stands.

"We will forever cherish the special memories we have of you and you will continue to live on in your beautiful son."
