Following a major stand-off between police and agitating teachers on Thursday night leading to injuries of several agitating teachers and police personnel, West Bengal Police claimed 19 police personnel were injured. Police admitted to have applied "minimal" force to bring out the employees working from Bikash Bhawan. Several teachers were injured and were hospitalized with leg and eye injuries. Meanwhile, the teachers have called a major rally today inviting people from all walks of lives and all political parties without their party flags to show solidarity to the police "excesses" last night. "Altogether 19 police personnel were injured. We will take legal action against those who provoked. We will probe it as we have CCTV footages," ADG South Bengal Supratim Sarkar said.
"There are around 58 departments which function from Bikash Bhawan with more than 500 employees work in the building. Our sole aim was to bring them out," ADG-Law & order Javed Shamim clarified.

Talking about chronology of events that unfolded, Shamim said, "The whole police action was done to ensure to bring out the employees from Bikash Bhawan. We had no intention to stop the movement of the teachers. After the Supreme Court judgements, the teachers have been agitating in various locations for the last ten days. There were agitation of the teachers in Bikash Bhawan as well. Yesterday, since morning 11-12 a huge crowd of teachers assembled and broke the barricades. Police tried to reason with them and they broke the barricades and literally took over the premises. There are around 58 dept function from Bikash Bhawan, including SAT, Vigilance, Disaster Management, Tribal department and more than 500 employees work there."
However, contrary to police claims, teachers claimed about the presence of the outsiders, wearing police uniforms and falsely posing as police.
"Wearing the police dress, some people tortured us. When we questioned, these personnel could not show us any identity," another teacher said.
"The stand-off continued for the whole day. Despite, police exercised maximum restraint possible. They put locks at the gates in the evening. We negotiated with them and reasoning with them, made repeated pleadings to allow the government employees to come out," Shamim said. "We have followed all protocols and did miking before lathicharged.".
"Police tried to make a way out and there was a stand-off. Innocent government employees were blockaded. Whatever was done, sole purpose of ensuring that innocent government employees were able to reach home, the officials added.
Teachers claimed that they were tortured and beaten up. "We were beaten up brutally, kicked, but they did not stop when the stick was broken. They were still beating up," another teacher claimed.
The teachers, who are still protesting, countered the "minimal force" by police. "The minimum force of police has led to severe eye injuries, broken legs, bleeding heads of the teachers," the agitating teachers claimed. Teachers getting injured due to lathicharge could be seen in the videos of the various audio-visual channels.
"We are sympathetic to the protestors who are losing jobs. It is a big situation. We have applied minimum force. There were various departments in Bikash Bhawan. There were 55 government departments. Right of freedom of movement is there. Those who got stuck, have freedom of movement. Elderly employees, Women and pregnant women were stuck," ADG -law & Order Javed Shamim said.
"Law should be abided by everyone. We respect the sentiments of the teachers. We are all government employees and they have lost their jobs," Shamim added.
ADG-South Bengal Supratim Sarkar, "The teachers who lost jobs, for the last ten days were organizing protests. admin and police were conducting protests peacefully. Around 2000-2500 came from outside and broke barricades. Police requested but they broke the gates and entered Bikash Bhawna, barricade was broken. They demanded that they will not allow anyone to come out."
"We have showed patience and counselled for seven hours. There are 55 department in Bikash Bhawan. Had police wanted to apply force, they could have done when the break was broken. Police was controlled and patient," Sarkar said.
"Police several times requested but they said they were unable. There were women, pregnant woman and elderly women. People and employees were stopped. Whenever we tried, we were stopped. Compelled, a woman jumped from Mezanine floor and go injured. When we tried to bring the people out, while a section of protestors pushed. We have to put force to bring out the people. This is not the way protest," Sarkar said.
"We are sympathetic to the protestors who are losing jobs. It is a big situation. We have applied minimum force. There were various departments in Bikash Bhawan. There were 55 government departments. Right of freedom of movement is there. Those who got stuck, have freedom of movement. Elderly employees, Women and pregnant women were stuck," ADG -law & Order Javed Shamim said.
