Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday raised concerns over the inclusion of a Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi from Assam in the proposed all-party delegations to key partner countries.
Sarma had earlier alleged that Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi took 90 youths to the Pakistan Embassy under false pretences and exposed them to radicalisation.
Sarma stated in X to the post of Congress leader Jairam Ramesh,” One of the MPs named in the list ( from Assam) has not denied his prolonged stay in Pakistan—reportedly for two weeks—and credible documents show that his wife was drawing salary from a Pakistan-based NGO while working in India. In the interest of national security and beyond partisan politics, I urge leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi not to include this individual in such a sensitive and strategic assignment.”
Ramesh stated in X, “Yesterday morning, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju spoke with the Congress President and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. The INC was asked to submit names of 4 MPs for the delegations to be sent abroad to explain India's stance on terrorism from Pakistan. By noon yesterday May 16th, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha wrote to the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs giving the following names on behalf of the INC. 1. Shri Anand Sharma, former Union Cabinet Minister 2. Shri Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader, INC LS 3. Dr. Syed Naseer Hussain, MP, RS 4. Shri Raja Brar, MP, LS.”
On May 6, Sarma said, “Two to three youths have confessed that they were misled—they were told they would visit various embassies but were instead taken to the Pakistan Embassy.”
Sarma had alleged that Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi's wife Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi has "good relations" with the Pakistan Army.
Sarma claimed that Colburn had travelled 19 times between India and Pakistan, and Pakistan Army officials had accompanied her in the neighbouring country.
"She worked in Pakistan and then came to Delhi to work in a non-governmental organisation, but continued receiving her salary from Pakistan," the CM alleged.
Sarma claimed that Gogoi stayed in Pakistan for 15 days. His visit was personal."His wife accompanied him, but she returned after seven days, while Gogoi stayed for another seven days. He must explain what he did in Pakistan for 15 days.It must be ascertained what he did in Pakistan and whether he helped their army directly or indirectly. The context of the visit must be established.”
The Chief Minister claimed that the Special Investigation Team (SIT), inquiring into links between Pakistan national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh and his partners in India, has completed the investigation and "we have evidence that Gogoi had gone through the Wagah-Attari border".
The Assam CM and the BJP have been attacking Gogoi, the Deputy Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha, over his British wife Elizabeth Colburn’s alleged connection with Pakistan’s spy agency ISI.
Earlier the chief minister had said the government may seek help from agencies like Interpol in investigating the alleged interference of Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, who is claimed to have links with Gogoi’s British wife Elizabeth Colburn, in India’s internal affairs.
Sheikh, an advisor of the Pakistan Planning Commission and a former colleague of Colburn, was charged under various sections of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhtia (BNS) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
A statement issued by the Parliamentary Affairs Ministry earlier on Saturday said the all-party delegations will project India's national consensus and resolute approach to combating terrorism in all forms and manifestations.
"They would carry forth to the world the country's strong message of zero tolerance against terrorism.
"In the context of Operation Sindoor and India's continued fight against cross-border terrorism, seven all-party delegations are set to visit key partner countries, including members of the UN Security Council later this month," it said.
