The Madras High Court has stayed the declaration of NEET-UG 2025 results following the hearing of pleas of 13 candidates who claimed that their exam experience was severely affected by a power outage at the Avadi examination centre near Chennai.
Justice V. Lakshminarayanan issued the interim order on May 16, 2025, barring the National Testing Agency (NTA) from releasing the results until further proceedings.
The candidates were among the 464 who attempted the exam at the Avadi centre. Theu argued that the power outage disrupted their ability to complete the exam properly. The power cut, which lasted from 3:00 pm to 4:15 pm on May 4, 2025, did not have any backup arrangements at the venue. This forced the students to attempt the exam in poor lighting. Further, rainwater entered the exam hall, forcing the candidates to shift to a different location. Despite their requests for extra time to make up for the disruptions, these were denied by the exam authorities.
What happens next?
NTA is now required to submit its response by June 2, 2025. The delay in the results has caused concern among candidates, especially those eager to move forward with their academic careers.
However, the stay does not affect the release of the provisional answer key, which is expected to be made available soon.
The NEET 2025 answer key will be released on the official website, neet.nta.nic.in, soon. Candidates will also have an opportunity to challenge the answer key if they believe any answers are incorrect. To do so, candidates will need to pay Rs 200 per challenge within the specified time frame. The NTA will review all objections and issue the final answer key after addressing the challenges.
