Following allegations by Bharatiya Janata Party leaders that the West Bengal police are preventing people from celebrating Ram Navami, party MP Arun Govil on Saturday appealed to the state government to allow the processions to happen, citing instances of aggression or violence during celebrations.
"I want to appeal to the West Bengal government to reconsider their decision. There is never any aggression in such processions, so why do they think such things? I still don't understand," the BJP MP told ANI.
Mentioning that the whole country "echoes with Jai Shri Ram," the state government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, should "rethink their decision."
"Whenever there is a procession of Ram Navami, I have seen a lot of them, and attended them they are always peaceful. Ram Mandir was formed after 500 years, and the entire country echoes with 'Jai Shri Ram'. Government should think over their decision," Govil said.
Earlier, West Bengal's Assembly's Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari alleged that police, under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's rule, had denied him permission to celebrate Ram Navami. He added that the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government has forced them to go to the High Court and Supreme Court regarding every issue.
Speaking to ANI, Adhikari said, "It is our constitutional right to celebrate our religious festivals, but the Mamata Banerjee's police are stopping us. We are forced to go to the High Court and Supreme Court regarding every issue."
After Adhikari moved the court, the Calcutta High Court passed an order on Friday for the Howrah Ram Navami rally. The rally will take place between 3-5 pm; no arms will be allowed in the rally. Motorcycle rallies will not be allowed. A rally has to be arranged peacefully with proper Police guidance
Rally by AnjPutra Sena, Vishva Hindu Parishad and Durga Vahini have been permitted. This rally will be done with 500 people. All rallies will happen on the same route of GT Road.
With Ram Navami preparations in full swing, markets and shops in West Bengal's Howrah district have been decked up with flags and posters for the festival which will be celebrated nationwide on April 6. Police deployment in Kolkata and Howrah has also happened to ensure a peaceful celebration.
