Mumbai Indians suffered their third defeat in the IPL match against Lucknow Super Giants at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium. A strange incident happened in the last over of the match, in which star Indian batsman Tilak Varma was involved. Despite being unbeaten, Tilak Varma returned to the dressing room in the middle of the 19th over. Tilak Varma decided to retire himself and return to the pavilion. The reason for this was that when the team needed fours and sixes, those runs were not coming out of Tilak's bat. He was not looking in form. He did score 25 runs in 23 balls but he was not able to time the ball properly. Since Mumbai Indians needed players who could hit fours and sixes, they had to call back Tilak Varma, who was out of form.

Tilak Varma was fielded as an impact player in place of Vignesh Puthur. But he could not show his impact. Mitchell Santner was brought in his place but this formula of Mumbai did not work for them. The team lost by 12 runs in the last over. Commentator Harbhajan Singh raised questions about Tilak's retirement. Bhajji said that calling Tilak in the middle and bringing Santner was beyond his understanding. As long as Suryakumar Yadav was at the crease, Mumbai's victory seemed certain. But on the first ball of the 17th over, Avesh Khan dismissed Suryakumar. After this, the responsibility fell on captain Hardik Pandya and Tilak Verma. Tilak was called back by Mumbai on the fifth ball of the 19th over and retired out.
What is the retired out rule?
When a batsman leaves his innings midway and goes to the pavilion without consulting/consenting with the umpire or the captain of the opposing team, he is considered retired. According to the rules, it is considered a wicket. Once a batsman is retired, he cannot come to bat again.

Tilak became the fourth player to retire from IPL
Tilak Verma became the fourth player to retire out in the history of IPL. Ravichandran Ashwin was the first player to retire out in the IPL. When he played for Rajasthan Royals against LSG in the 2022 season. In IPL 2023, Sai Sudarshan of Gujarat Titans and Atharva Tayade of Punjab Kings were retired out.
