Alipurduar, West Bengal: In a scathing attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a rally in Alipurduar on Thursday, May 29, called West Bengal a state “plagued with problems” and blamed the Mamata Banerjee-led government for widespread corruption, violence, and breakdown of law and order.

The Prime Minister made a passionate appeal to the people of Bengal to unite for a "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India), while criticising the state’s leadership for failing its citizens.

Murshidabad Violence a Sign of ‘Cruelty’, Says PM

PM Modi condemned the recent communal unrest in Malda and Murshidabad following the passage of the Waqf Amendment Act 2025, dubbing the incidents “an example of the government's ruthlessness”. He blamed the TMC for allowing lawlessness to flourish under the garb of appeasement politics.

“Whatever happened in Murshidabad and Malda was an example of the government's ruthlessness here... In the name of appeasement, hooliganism was given a free hand. Imagine the horrific situation when the people of a party running the government identify and burn people's houses, and the police act as mere spectators," Modi said during the rally.

Asserting that faith in the TMC regime had eroded, he added, “Bengal mein machi cheekh pukaar, nahi chahiye nirmam sarkar (There is hue and cry in Bengal, we don't want a cruel government)."

Corruption, Recruitment Scam and Education Crisis

PM Modi also attacked the TMC over the multi-crore teacher recruitment scam, accusing the party of “ruining the future and families of thousands of teachers." "The youth and poor families suffer the worst consequences of corruption... The absence of teachers has put the futures of lakhs of students at risk,” he said.

Taking a historical turn, the Prime Minister referenced atrocities committed in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) during 1947–1971 and declared, “From this land of Bengal, I declare on behalf of 140 crore Indians that Operation Sindoor is not yet over.”

West Bengal Assembly elections are due in 2026.
