Two Brits shot dead on Costa del Sol as 'masked men' open fire on bar

Two Brits have been shot dead in a horrifying attack at an Irish bar in a popular holiday resort. Masked men are said to have stormed Monaghans bar in Fuengirola on Saturday night and the victims in front of horrified who were out enjoying a drink after the final.

Disturbing images taken at the scene of the shooting, which happened at around 11.30pm, show a lifeless body on the ground at a terrace outside the -themed bar. According to initial reports, some hooded men got out of a car and shot at one or more people who were at the door of the establishment. It is believed the by just one of the assailants as panicked crowds fled the bar onto the street.

One of the victims was shot in the chest, dying almost instantly, while the second was initially considered seriously injured but died at the scene before he could be taken to a hospital, reports Diario Sur.

A third person was injured after being hit by the bullets, but their condition has not been disclosed. The Subdelegate of the Government in Malaga, Francisco Javier Salas, says both victims were of Scottish nationality.

National and Local Police raced to the scene and were joined by health workers who desperately tried to resuscitate the men, without success. After confirming the deaths, the judicial commission was activated and specialists from the Specialised and Violent Crime Unit (UDEV) and the Scientific Police were mobilised. Forensic teams have carried out initial enquiries at the scene to gather evidence.

The victims were gunned down on the promenade of Rey de España next to the Martín Playa beach bar. The residential area, although considered quiet, usually has a large footfall of tourists. It is thought the event was witnessed by more than a dozen people.

The masked men fled the scene down an alleyway and remain at large, with no arrests made despite a strong emergency services presence across Fuengirola and on the Costa del Sol.

According to , the National Police's initial assessments suggests a 'settling of scores' might have been behind the shooting. Forensics police have already conducted initial investigations at the scene.

The area has registered several shootings and murders throughout this year, but the central government and the Anti-Drug Prosecutor's Office recently denied an upturn in crime in that part of the Malaga coast.
