With summer on the way, many households will be planning to jet off to far-flung locations or enjoy a relaxing . But whether you're flying abroad or staying in the UK, holidays can prove rather expensive, and there's one thing you could be doing that will only increase costs further.

Richard Edwards, owner of, explained how to on your staycation: "Most people make one big mistake when booking their staycation. They zero in on accommodations smack in the middle of tourist hotspots, which drives up their costs massively, sometimes by hundreds of pounds." Instead, he suggests looking beyond the popular spots for accomodation.

Richard highlights what he calls the 'five-mile rule', where you look for accommodation options just a short distance from the main attractions rather than right in the centre of tourist hotspots.

He explained: "Staying even just five miles outside the most popular areas can slash your accommodation costs by 30-40% for essentially the same holiday experience

"It's simple supply and demand - properties in the heart of places like the Cotswolds or the Lake District charge premium rates because everyone wants to stay there."

The difference in prices can add up quickly, with a week's stay in tourist hotspots often costing around £800-1,200 during peak season, while accommodation just a few minutes' drive away can be around £500-700, leaving you with more to enjoy activities while on holiday.

If you frequently enjoy staycations, then this change can save you thousands over a couple of years.

And it's not just cheaper holidays that you can enjoy, properties on the outskirts of tourist areas often offer a more authentic slice of local life, away from the crowds.

Richard says: "Our guests regularly tell us how much they appreciate the peace and quiet.

"After a day exploring busy tourist spots, they love returning to a tranquil setting where they can actually hear the birds singing instead of tour buses."

Other benefits of booking accommodation further from hotspots include being able to opt for a slightly bigger property in a quieter location, which means you'll likely have an easier time parking and a more peaceful holiday.

Richard adds that you may even be able to get tips from locals, explaining: "Hosts of properties away from the main tourist drag often have the best insider knowledge.

"We point our guests to hidden gems like secret swimming spots on the Wye and pubs where locals actually eat - places you won't find in the guidebooks."
