Mould develops in damp, shaded areas where moisture remains for long periods. Therefore, patios - particularly ones with poor drainage or frequent shade - act as "the perfect breeding ground". Doug O'Connor from Deer Fencing explained that besides mould looking unattractive, it can "pose health risks and attract unwanted wildlife to your home", which is why preventing it from developing is important and the use of can help with that.
"When morning dew or rainwater pools settle in, the combination of warmth, organic debris, and humidity encourages rapid mould growth," Doug explains.
"Concrete, wood, and stone patios can all fall victim to this issue, particularly if they aren't properly maintained or sealed."
The fluctuating temperatures and frequent rainfall throughout spring gives mould the perfect environment to grow and spread quickly. If it is left unchecked, it can be extremely difficult to get rid of over time.
Doug said: "Prolonged exposure to mould can exacerbate existing health conditions and even contribute to chronic respiratory issues."
Those who suffer with , asthma, or compromised immune systems can become vulnerable to a number of symptoms including, persistent coughing and wheezing, nasal congestion and sneezing, skin irritation or rashes, as well as eye irritation and watery eyes
Fortunately, this DIY method offers a quick and cheap way to avoid mould growth. Mix white vinegar and water together and simply spraying the affected area. Let it sit for 15 minutes and then scrub and rinse.
Doug highlighted that "recognising the early signs" of a mould issue is the "key to preventing" it. He added: "If you notice persistent dark patches that return quickly after cleaning, or if your patio develops a musty odour, these are warning signals that mould has taken hold. Addressing mould problems early can save you from costly repairs and potential health hazards."
