Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday launched chief minister’s Atmanirbhar Asom Abhijan 2.0 (CMAAA), under which 75,000 young entrepreneurs of the state will be provided financial assistance to empower them to become self-reliant.

The first phase of CMAAA was launched in Sept last year.

However, the scheme will not be applicable to five districts — Nagaon, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Chirang and Cachar — where the model code of conduct is in force till Nov 20 due to byelections.

Launching the scheme, Sarma said, “Through the CMAAA, we are aiming to reduce unemployment and foster entrepreneurship in Assam. By providing financial assistance, training and market access, this scheme focuses on empowering youth to become self-reliant. Under the first phase of CMAAA, 25,238 budding entrepreneurs were provided with the first instalment of Rs 75,000 on Sept 30. The beneficiaries have to complete a three-day long training to get another instalment of Rs 25,000, which will be provided to them in Nov.

The CM added that the beneficiaries will be then monitored on the utilisation of the money for a year and if they wisely use the amount, they will be given another Rs 1 lakh financial assistance in the next year. “The 75,000 beneficiaries under the second phase of the scheme will be chosen proportionately from across 126 assembly constituencies so that an environment of industrialisation can be created in the state,” Sarma said.

This year, applicants in the age group of 28-45 years will be eligible to apply for all categories. While the general category applicants have to be matriculated, SC,ST and OBC applicants have to be educated up to class X to get benefits under the scheme. Each family can not have more than one beneficiary under the scheme. Candidates can apply for benefits under CMAAA 2.0 till Nov 18 this year.

Under the CMAAA scheme, general graduate beneficiaries to get a maximum of Rs 2 lakh as assistance from the govt, while entrepreneurs having professional degrees can get up to Rs 5 lakh as financial assistance from the govt. During the launch of CMAAA 2.0 on Friday, a few of the fellows, who will guide the beneficiaries of CMAAA 1.0, were also ceremonially distributed appointment letters by the chief minister.
