Watch: Heated argument over cab fare in Delhi goes viral– here's what led to the clash

Send Push
A viral video that recently emerged online shows a tense exchange between a cab driver and a group of women passengers in central Delhi. The incident, which took place during their ride, centers around an unpaid fare, shedding light on the issues faced by app-based ride services and the growing mistrust between drivers and passengers.

Women refuse to pay for the ride

In the video, the incident starts when the women, who had booked a ride from Patparganj to Maruti Vihar, choose to exit the cab before reaching their destination. When the driver requested payment for the distance already traveled, tensions rose. The passengers reportedly refused to pay, insisting that the driver cancel the ride through the app instead.

The video shows the driver trying to stay calm, offering to drop the passengers wherever they wanted, but the women stuck to their position, accusing him of misconduct. Despite the growing argument, the exact location of the incident remains uncertain.

A divided opinion: Who’s at fault?

As the video quickly spread on social media, it sparked a heated debate. People took sides, with some supporting the driver and others backing the passengers. Many questioned the fairness of the situation and whether such incidents are becoming too common in the growing ride-hailing industry.

One user remarked, “I never pay the driver directly. They are also saying we will pay through the app. You get rides through the app, but you want the payment directly in cash from the customer.”

Others voiced concerns about the intentions behind the cancellation of the ride. “When you can’t afford it, why do you book & cancel a trip, incurring losses for the cab person? This shows something mischievous being played by the customer,” said one commenter.

A growing trend?

Some viewers also raised questions about possible tactics used by passengers to avoid paying fares. “This was a part of their game. The location was entered a little far away, and the landing was to be done before that. A ruckus was created in between so that no money would have to be paid,” another user speculated.

The comments suggest that incidents like this are becoming increasingly common in India, with some even calling it a new trend. “This Kalesh is trending nowadays,” one comment summed up, referring to the ongoing spate of public disputes captured on video.

Cab aggregators stay silent, no official complaint filed yet

Despite the widespread attention the incident has received, neither the ride-hailing company nor any transport authorities have commented on the situation. It's still unclear whether the driver or passengers have filed formal complaints with the police or if any further action will be taken.

Accountability in the ride-hailing industry

While this incident is just one example of the occasional disputes between drivers and passengers, it also brings attention to a bigger issue within the ride-hailing industry. As app-based services become a key mode of transport in cities like Delhi, the need for better communication, fair practices, and increased accountability is growing.

With both passengers and drivers depending on these platforms for their livelihoods and daily commutes, incidents like this highlight the ongoing conversation about fairness, trust, and customer service in the rapidly evolving world of app-based transportation.
