Want to live longer? Science says eating more protein might be the answer

Well, it is a well established fact that a healthy diet plays a crucial role in promoting longevity and overall well-being. Nutrient-rich foods support cellular function, combat inflammation, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. However, the latest research on increased protein intake and its ability to extend life expectancy is worth noting.

A recent study by researchers at Brown University suggests that protein intake may play a key role in slowing down the aging process. The researchers concluded that a protein-rich diet could have anti-aging benefits. "Manipulating the gut hormones can help improve longevity in humans as well," the study explained.

Led by Marc Tatar, the research was conducted on fruit flies and focused on a hormone produced in their gut called Neuropeptide F. This hormone is part of the incretin family which helps with insulin production. The study found that manipulating Neuropeptide F levels could extend the lifespan of fruit flies. In humans, a similar hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) has the same function.

The connection between gut hormones and aging is linked to the interaction between the gut, brain, and other organs. When fruit flies consume protein-rich foods, Neuropeptide F is released into the bloodstream. It then travels to the brain and triggers the production of insulin-like hormones and juvenile hormones. Lower levels of juvenile hormone were found to contribute to a longer lifespan in fruit flies.

While the research was conducted on fruit flies, results suggest that regulating gut hormones in humans through protein diet could also enhance longevity and mitigate the negative effects of unhealthy diets.
