SRINAGAR: Inconsolable family members of the tourists massacred in Pahalgam wailed and quivered with grief as they narrated their horror stories to Union home minister Amit Shah, who met them at the police control room in Srinagar on Wednesday. In the videos, grieving relatives of the victims were seen making heart-rending appeals as Shah consoled them.
The wife and children of Raipur-based steel businessman Dinesh Miraniya, who was shot dead in front of his family, were among the victims whom Shah met. He assured the family members that “the perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared.” Expressing the sorrow of the nation, Shah said, “The pain of losing a loved one to such barbarism is felt by every Indian.”
The Miraniya family had travelled to Kashmir to celebrate the couple’s wedding anniversary. They were taking photographs in the picturesque Baisaran Valley when terrorists emerged from the nearby hills, asked for their names, and began shooting. The terrorist shot Miraniya at point-blank range --- from so close, in fact, that his wife Neha suffered gunpowder burns on her face from the muzzle flash when she jumped towards him in a desperate effort to shield him.
Shah earlier arrived at the police headquarters, where he laid wreaths on the coffins of the victims. He asserted that the country will not bend to terror, and assured the survivors that no stones would be left unturned to bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act to justice, officials said.
The home minister later flew in a chopper to Baisaran meadows, the scene of the gruesome killings, and interacted with senior Army and police officers. He was told about the sequence of events and the possible routes the terrorists took to reach the popular tourist spot, which is surrounded by thick pine forests, sources said. DGP Nalin Prabhat and GoC of the Army’s 15 Corps, Lt-General Prashant Srivastava, were among the officers present at the site.
Shah later met the injured admitted in Govt Medical College Hospital in Anantnag and inquired about their condition. The doctors were seen briefing him about the treatment. The home minister was accompanied by LG Manoj Sinha and CM Omar Abdullah.
