NEW DELHI: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah said the grenade attack at the ‘Sunday market’ in Srinagar was "deeply disturbing" and that there was "no justification for targeting innocent civilians". He also said the "security apparatus must do everything possible" at the earliest to stop the recent series of attacks. The attack has left at least 11 injured.
"The last few days have been dominated by headlines of attacks & encounters in parts of the valley. Today’s news of a grenade attack on innocent shoppers at the ‘Sunday market’ in Srinagar is deeply disturbing. There can be no justification for targeting innocent civilians. The security apparatus must do everything possible to end this spurt of attacks at the earliest so that people can go about their lives without any fear," he said in a post on X.
'Such incidents increased since elections'
Congress leader Ravinder Sharma claimed that the terror incidents in the Union territory had increased since the elections were held in the valley and the formation of the Abdullah government.
"This is a conspiracy to disturb the atmosphere here. Such incidents have increased ever since elections have been held and the new government has been formed," he said.
"Sunday market is mostly crowded. I will pray for the well-being of those injured in the attack... This proves that militancy is still there in the valley... Central government has the entire law and order and security apparatus in its hand. We call for strict action," he added.
'Not right to play blame game'
Union minister and BJP leader Prahlad Joshi assured that the central government and the UT government would take a joint action against terrorism and added that it wasn't "right to play a blame game."
"The grenade attack in the Sunday market of Srinagar is very unfortunate. Such elements are always working to destabilise the country. The Indian government has zero tolerance towards terrorism. The Indian government and J&K government will take joint action in this regard," he said.
"This is an issue of National Security. It has hardly been 20 days since the formation of the new government, it is not right to play a blame game. It gives an upper hand to Pakistan," he added.
Terrorists targeted a CRPF bunker with a grenade near a bustling flea market in the city, injuring at least 11 civilians, according to officials.
The attack occurred close to a heavily fortified area that includes All India Radio and Doordarshan Kendra, near the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC).
This incident follows the recent elimination of a prominent Pakistani commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) by security forces in the Khanyar area of downtown Srinagar just a day earlier.
