Operation Sindoor: Did TMC opt out of Centre's all-party delegation? What Mamata Banerjee said

NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress head Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that they received no request from the Centre for names on all-party delegations, rejecting the claim that it is the decision of the government and not the party.

On being asked if TMC has opted out of the Centre's multi-party diplomatic mission aimed at countering Pakistan-sponsored terrorism , WB CM Mamata said, "No request came to us. If a request came to us, then we could consider. We are in favour of the country. In the external affairs issue, we have always supported the policy of the Centre. At present, we are supporting the Central Govt's views and actions. They cannot decide the member's name on their own. It is not their choice, it is the choice of the party. If they requested me to send someone, we will decide the name and tell them. It is not that we are boycotting or that we are not going."

Meanwhile, general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee said that whilst the party supports the Centre in fighting terrorism, the Union government cannot unilaterally select party representatives.

"I don't know from where you got this information. I am saying this very clearly that whatever decision the Union government takes, which aims at combating terrorism to protect the national interest of the country, TMC will stand with the Centre shoulder to shoulder," Banerjee responded regarding TMC's alleged withdrawal from the Centre's multi-party diplomatic mission against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.

He clarified that whilst they support delegations, party member selection should remain internal. "We do not have a problem with any delegation going...Which member of our party will go in the delegation is the decision of my party. The Centre or the Union Government cannot decide who will go from which party unilaterally. Which member of TMC, DMK, Congress, AAP and Samajwadi Party will go in the delegation should be decided by the party itself," he elaborated.

Banerjee emphasised that TMC has not boycotted Operation Sindoor , stating they are the sole party avoiding politicisation of the issue. Simultaneously, TMC leader Sagarika Ghosh affirmed via X that foreign policy remains the government's responsibility, whilst expressing solidarity with armed forces against Pakistan-based terrorism.

Earlier, PTI confirmed an unknown TMC source indicating that no party representative would participate in the government's initiative to send delegations to over 30 countries, despite earlier reports suggesting MP Yusuf Pathan's involvement.

The initiative comprises seven groups, each led by an MP, aimed at addressing global misinformation and highlighting India's anti-terrorism stance. Operation Sindoor commenced on May 7, targeting terror installations in Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.
