NUS and top Indian universities to explore joint degree programs, research initiatives: Dharmendra Pradhan

NEW DELHI: National University of Singapore ( NUS ), ranked eighth globally, to explore collaboration with Indian higher education institutions, which include joint/dual degree and twinning arrangements, joint academic and research initiatives , informed union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan on his first day of Singapore visit on Monday. Pradhan held a meeting with the Prime Minister of Singapore, Lawrence Wong.

According to senior officials from the education ministry the discussions centred on enhancing bilateral cooperation in school education, vocational training , and research between India and Singapore. The focus was on advancing the partnership through the key pillars of ‘talent, resource, and market.’

Pradhan also met his counterpart, Chan Chun Sing, to explore ways of strengthening bilateral cooperation across various education sectors and Singapore’s minister for foreign affairs, Vivian Balakrishnan, to discuss enhancing the India-Singapore Knowledge Partnership.

In his meeting with Wong, Pradhan emphasised India’s view of Singapore as a trusted knowledge partner, particularly in the realms of deep tech, startups, and innovation ecosystems. He noted that the strategic framework outlined by Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Lawrence Wong aims to elevate India-Singapore cooperation into a comprehensive partnership, including collaboration in critical and emerging sectors.

With Sing, Pradhan discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation across various education sectors and opportunities for overseas internships, allowing Indian students to gain hands-on experience in Singaporean companies. They also deliberated on fostering cultural exchange through twinning programs for schools in both countries and explored joint research collaborations in fields such as deep tech, medicine, and advanced materials.

Pradhan also toured the NUS and held discussions with its President, Tan Eng Chye as they explored opportunities to deepen engagements between NUS and top Indian higher education institutions, particularly in deep tech startups, healthcare, advanced materials, digitalization, and sustainability. Discussions also include offering joint/ dual degree and twinning degrees.

Pradhan’s visit to Singapore, followed by a trip to Australia from October 20 to 26, 2024, aims to strengthen collaboration and participation in critical areas of mutual interest in education, furthering the synergy between India and these nations.
