China shared a cartoon mocking US allies hours after President Donald Trump imposed sweeping tariffs on adversaries and allies alike.
In the cartoon, which depicts a lion —symbolizing US economic power, Beijing called Washinton a "greedy beast".
The characters representing different Western nations, appear increasingly battered in each panel: a European woman, a Canadian man, and a suited figure (possibly symbolizing global business or another U.S. ally) all plead for restraint. In the final panel, however, the lion turns ferocious, devouring them completely, leaving behind broken glass, torn limbs, and bloodstained national symbols.
The message is a direct condemnation of Trump's tariff moves, which have hit both longtime allies like Canada, the European Union, and Japan, as well as geopolitical rivals like China.
The Biden and Trump administrations have both employed tariffs as a key tool in trade policy, but the latest wave of aggressive tariff measures under Trump’s current administration has sparked outrage even among traditional US allies.
Trump on Wednesday unveiled an extensive new tariff regime, imposing a 10% baseline tax on imports from most countries, with significantly higher levies for those running trade surpluses with the United States. However, Canada and Mexico have been notably left off the list for additional tariffs, with the White House citing existing agreements as the reason.
Speaking at the White House, Trump presented a chart displaying the new tariff rates: 34% on Chinese imports, 20% on goods from the European Union, 25% on South Korea, 24% on Japan, and 32% on Taiwan. The president framed his move as a response to what he described as decades of economic exploitation.
“Our country has been looted, pillaged, raped, plundered by nations near and far, both friend and foe alike,” Trump declared. “They rip us off, it’s so pathetic. Now, we’re going to charge.”
Shaken US allies are set to press Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday for clarity on Washington's stance toward Nato and Ukraine, but his first visit to the alliance risks being overshadowed by an escalating trade war.
President Donald Trump has unsettled Western security by questioning Nato's collective defense commitment, courting Russia—Europe’s longtime adversary—and issuing threats against Canada and Denmark.
Adding to transatlantic tensions, the unpredictable leader announced fresh tariffs on Wednesday, targeting allies and setting the stage for potential retaliation.

Appeasement doesn't work for a greedy beast🇺🇸. No matter how much you sacrifice to feed it, eventually it will eat you alive #Tariffs pic.twitter.com/49LfGJO2cU
