President Donald Trump played down the major row over his AI image dressed as the pope and said he did not make it. Somebody made it for fun and Catholics loved it, he said adding that only fake news media had a problem with it. The AI image created a stir among the Cardinals as even MAGA supporters condemned it and called it insulting.
“Somebody made up a picture of me dressed like the pope, and they put it out on the internet. That’s not me that did it. I have no idea where it came from. Maybe it was AI, but I know nothing about it. I just saw it last evening,” the president said in the Oval Office Monday.
Trump then said Melania liked the photo and thought it was cute and then he moved to a joke that had he been the pope, he would not have a wife. “Actually, my wife thought it was cute. She said: ‘Isn’t that nice?’” the president added.
Then Trump was asked why the official White House X handle posted the image. "Give me a break," Trump said. "Somebody did it in fun," the president added.
Massive row over Trump's AI-Pope image
Cardinal Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York, who Trumpo hinted should be the next pope said the AI photo of Trump as pope was not good. Italy’s former prime minister, Matteo Renzi, condemned the image as offensive to those of Catholic faith. “This is an image that offends believers, insults institutions and shows that the leader of the right-wing world enjoys clowning around,” he wrote on X.
Italian daily La Repubblica called Trump's gesture of posting an AI image of himself in papal dress an "infantile". It accused thepresident of "pathological megalomania".
The office of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, an international ally of Trump, said they would not comment on the matter.
“President Trump flew to Italy to pay his respects for Pope Francis and attend his funeral, and he has been a staunch champion for Catholics and religious liberty,” press secretary Karoline Leavitt said when asked to respond to the criticism.
